SpaceX’s Starbase Facility in Boca Chica, Texas: A Closer Look
Elon Musk recently shared a captivating nighttime photograph of SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, offering a stunning view of an operation that is reshaping the southern tip of the Lone Star State into a groundbreaking launch complex.
The photo showcases two fully erected Starship launch towers, with the newly completed Pad B featuring its towering OLIT-3 structure standing at 474 feet tall. This tower includes an integrated water-cooled flame trench to enhance launch efficiency and reduce turnaround time between missions. The dual-tower skyline signifies a shift towards high-cadence launch operations at the facility.

Pad 2 at Starbase is nearing hardware completion, with upgraded chopstick arms, a new chilldown vent system, and protective doors for its 20 hold-down arms. These enhancements are crucial for accommodating the powerful exhaust from up to 33 Raptor 3 engines, as detailed by NASASpaceFlight.
SpaceX has been granted approval to expand the Starbase launch site significantly, with plans to add LNG liquefaction plants, increased propellant storage, and additional ground support infrastructure to support future missions.
Not only a technological marvel, Starbase holds a civic significance as well. In May 2025, the facility officially became a city in Texas following a community vote, with SpaceX employees assuming key leadership roles. This new status grants SpaceX greater control over local infrastructure decisions and streamlines launch approvals.
The FAA has increased the annual launch limit at Starbase from five to twenty-five, paving the way for a higher frequency of missions essential for Starship’s diverse objectives, including lunar transport, defense contracts, satellite deployment, and Musk’s vision of a human settlement on Mars.
