Exciting News: First Tesla Semi Charging Station Now Open to the Public!
Tesla has taken a significant step forward in the world of heavy-duty electric trucking with the opening of its first public Semi Supercharger station, known as the Megawatt Charging System (MCS), in the Greater Los Angeles area. This station is now officially accessible to Tesla Semi customers, marking a major milestone for the electric trucking industry.
Situated in Ontario, California, this new public charging hub represents a significant advancement for the Tesla Semi program, as until now, Tesla Semis have primarily been charged at private, closed-loop routes.
Revolutionary Charging Technology
The newly launched Megacharger site at 4265 E Guasti Rd in Ontario boasts the ability to deliver up to 750 kW of power to Semis utilizing the facility. This rapid charging technology, akin to what’s installed at private facilities like PepsiCo’s Sacramento depot, enables Semis to be fully charged in under 45 minutes, reducing downtime for fleet operators.
Innovative Partnership with BP Pulse
Interestingly, the first public Semi charger is not a standalone Tesla-branded Supercharger lot. Instead, the Megachargers are housed at BP Pulse’s cutting-edge electric truck charging depot in Ontario. This multi-platform hub features two 750 kW Tesla MCS bays exclusively for the Semi, along with four 400 kW CCS bays for other electric heavy-duty trucks.
While the MCS sites are currently reserved for Tesla Semis, they will eventually be open to other brands. It’s worth noting that Tesla’s Semi does not have CCS ports, and as of now, there is no adapter available to utilize the legacy charging bays.
Advancing the Future of Trucking
With the deployment of public Megachargers, Tesla is paving the way for the Semi to handle long-haul interstate trucking. As Tesla gears up for mass production of the Semi by 2026 at its expanded Giga Nevada facility, the rapid expansion of the public MCS network will play a crucial role in convincing major fleet operators to embrace this innovative electric truck.
