An exciting development unfolded earlier this week as Dan Priestly, the head of the Tesla Semi program, shared a link to an updated Tesla map showcasing existing and planned Megacharger stations in the United States. This updated map highlights two current and 60 upcoming Tesla Semi Megacharger locations spread across the US, connecting major logistics routes from coast to coast.
Tesla, listed on NASDAQ as TSLA, has strategically chosen these Megacharger locations to optimize connectivity and efficiency for its Class 8 electric semi-truck. The Tesla Semi boasts a substantial battery pack of around 850 kWh, far exceeding the capabilities of traditional Tesla Superchargers with a max power of 500 kW. To address this, the first generation of Megachargers offers a peak charging rate of 1.2 Megawatts.
Last year, Tesla announced plans to add 46 new Megacharger locations in the US. However, the latest update reveals an increase to 60 new locations, bringing the total count to 62, with active sites in Sparks, Nevada, and Lathrop, California.
The first Megacharger at Giga Nevada serves Tesla’s own factory, facilitating the transportation of battery packs to its Fremont, California facility. Meanwhile, the second active location near Tesla’s Megafactory in Lathrop, CA, supports the shipping of Megapacks to customers and BESS project sites.
Among the upcoming Megacharger locations, Robstown, TX, near Tesla’s lithium factory in Corpus Christi, stands out. This strategic placement will streamline the delivery of lithium for cell manufacturing at Giga Nevada and other future Tesla sites.
According to the updated map, Texas leads with 19 Megacharger stations, followed by California with 16 upcoming locations. Tesla aims to complete a significant portion of these stations by the end of this year, pushing forward its original target of 46 locations by 2027.
