The recent highway range test in chilly Norway brought together three luxurious electric crossovers – the Audi Q6 E-Tron, Porsche Macan EV, and Polestar 3. Conducted by Kris Rifa, the test aimed to evaluate the efficiency of these vehicles in cold temperatures, which can significantly impact their range.
Driving at a constant speed of 75 mph on a 120-mile route, the efficiency of each vehicle was closely monitored throughout the test. Despite featuring the latest advancements in battery chemistry and thermal management, all three EVs were less efficient than expected due to the low temperatures, as explained in a recent article on InsideEVs.
The Polestar 3 emerged as the winner of the test, thanks to its larger battery pack, even though it was the least efficient among the three. With a 107 kilowatt-hour usable battery, the Polestar 3 showcased impressive performance and comfort on the highway, making it the top choice for long-distance driving.
During the test, conducted in Norway with temperatures as low as 23°F (-5°C), the vehicles were driven in their most efficient mode, with the interiors set to a comfortable 70°F (21°C). The Polestar 3, with its long wheelbase and luxurious features, stood out as the most comfortable for highway driving, while the Audi Q6 E-Tron and Porsche Macan EV also offered a smooth driving experience.
At the end of the test, the Polestar 3 demonstrated the longest theoretical range, with an average electricity consumption of 2.15 miles/kWh. This translated to a theoretical range of 225 miles, which is around 57% of its claimed WLTP range. The Audi Q6 E-Tron and Porsche Macan EV also delivered respectable performance, displaying efficiency levels of 2.42 miles/kWh and 2.28 miles/kWh, respectively.
