Electric cargo bikes are gaining popularity in American cities, offering a convenient and eco-friendly alternative to cars and public transportation for everyday errands. One such bike that has caught the attention of many is the Riese & Müller Carrie, a compact e-cargo bike designed for urban living.
I had the opportunity to test ride the Riese & Müller Carrie, thanks to the team at e-bike dealer Propel Bikes. The Carrie is a pedal-assist cargo e-bike with a unique folding “Flex Box” option that expands from 18 inches to 29.5 inches, providing ample cargo space of 4.7 cubic feet. While it may not match the Load4’s 13.5 cubic feet capacity, it is still sufficient for carrying groceries or a small child comfortably.
Equipped with a Bosch Performance Line mid-drive motor and Enviolo continuous hub, the Carrie offers a smooth and powerful ride. The five pedal-assist settings allow for speeds up to 28 mph, making it ideal for navigating city streets and bike paths. The bike’s compact size makes it easy to park and maneuver, perfect for apartment dwellers or those without garage space.
The Carrie comes with a price tag of $9,489 for the standard 545 Wh battery, with an optional 725 Wh upgrade available. While it may not be the most affordable option on the market, the Carrie’s thoughtful design and functionality make it a compelling choice for urban commuters and families.
However, the smaller size of the Carrie does come with some trade-offs. The bike’s child-carrying capacity is limited to two kids under the age of seven, and the cargo box lacks the underfloor storage compartment found in the Load, making it less versatile for larger items or multiple passengers.
Overall, the Riese & Müller Carrie is a well-designed and fun-to-ride e-cargo bike that offers practical utility in a compact package. Whether it’s the right choice for you depends on your priorities for compactness and maneuverability versus all-out carrying capacity. For urban dwellers looking for a stylish and efficient way to run errands or commute, the Carrie could be the perfect fit.
