Hyundai Sticks with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for Electric Cars
If you’ve been disappointed by General Motors’ decision to eliminate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from its electric cars, Hyundai has some good news for you. The South Korean brand is standing by the popular phone-mirroring applications, according to a recent interview with Olabisi Boyle, senior vice president of product planning and mobility strategy at Hyundai.
Boyle emphasized that Hyundai is currently maintaining support for Android Auto and CarPlay, stating, “It’s a little bit like EV charging. As we’re moving, give people all the options.” This commitment to providing choices extends to Hyundai’s recent decision to adopt Tesla’s charging port design, allowing customers access to around 17,000 Tesla Supercharger plugs.
In the midst of the auto industry’s transition to software-heavy, battery-powered vehicles, Hyundai is focused on enhancing its cars’ user interfaces while continuing to offer the familiar CarPlay and Android Auto features. Boyle stressed the importance of providing a range of options to consumers, including combustion models, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric cars. She acknowledged that while the industry is moving towards full electrification, the transition will take time and necessitate a flexible strategy.
As automakers increasingly position themselves as tech companies, there is a growing emphasis on software services and digital interfaces. This trend has led some manufacturers to exclude Apple and Google from their software ecosystems, a move that has been met with criticism. In contrast, Hyundai is investing in technology advancements, as seen in the newly unveiled Ioniq 9 three-row SUV, which offers a platform for owners to purchase upgrades on the go, starting with lighting options and custom display themes.
Looking ahead, Boyle believes that the auto industry will eventually converge on a standard software solution, potentially offering alternatives to CarPlay and Android Auto that have yet to be imagined. While change may be on the horizon, she recognizes the challenge of convincing consumers to embrace new technologies. Boyle emphasized the importance of allowing time for the industry to evolve and for consumers to adapt to new possibilities.
In conclusion, Hyundai’s commitment to supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto underscores its dedication to providing customers with a range of choices as the automotive landscape undergoes significant transformation. As the industry continues to evolve, Hyundai remains focused on delivering innovative solutions that meet the changing needs of consumers.
