- VW rules out multi-speed transmissions for EVs
- Manual transmission tested but not planned for production
- Efficiency improvements crucial but may increase costs
Volkswagen has decided not to pursue multi-speed transmissions for its electric vehicles, diverging from other automakers in the industry.
During the 2024 Los Angeles Auto Show, Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen’s head of global research and development, stated that the company does not believe there is a necessity for 2-speed transmissions in EVs.
Grünitz emphasized that the decision is primarily driven by the lack of demand from customers for multi-speed transmissions in electric vehicles at present.
He further explained that Volkswagen’s focus on efficiency is evident in models like the ID.7, which boasts high efficiency with a single-speed reduction gear.
While Volkswagen had experimented with a manual transmission for EVs, Grünitz confirmed that it was not well-received, highlighting the preference for the smooth driving experience associated with single-speed transmissions in electric vehicles.

While some competitors like Mercedes-Benz are adopting 2-speed transmissions for efficiency gains, Volkswagen remains focused on other avenues for enhancing efficiency without significantly increasing costs for consumers.
Grünitz raised concerns about the lack of emphasis on efficiency discussions among consumers and the potential impact on pricing if further efficiency improvements are pursued.
