Volvo Buses has introduced a groundbreaking new electric coach chassis, the BZR Electric, which boasts one of the largest-capacity battery packs in the industry. This innovative electric coach can achieve an impressive maximum driving range of 435 miles (700 kilometers) on a single charge, thanks to its modular design that can accommodate up to eight individual battery modules.
The BZR Electric chassis comes in three configurations, with the battery pack divided into separate modules. Each module has a storage capacity of 90 kilowatt-hours, with the smallest battery pack containing four modules for a total capacity of 360 kWh. However, the longest chassis version with a 6×2 wheel setup can accommodate up to eight modules, resulting in a massive total capacity of 720 kWh.
The electric coach is equipped with powerful motors capable of handling the hefty battery pack. The single-motor versions of the BZR Electric offer a maximum output of 268 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque at the output shaft. The dual-motor version takes it a step further with 536 horsepower and 626 pound-feet of torque at the motor, translating to 24,708 pound-feet of torque at the wheel.
Charging the Volvo BZR Electric can be done using a CCS2 connector that supports up to 250 kilowatts or through the innovative OppCharge system. This system features a pantograph that lowers from a protected stall and connects to a bar on the coach’s roof, allowing for charging speeds of up to 450 kW.
In addition to its impressive performance capabilities, the BZR Electric chassis is equipped with Volvo Buses’ latest advanced driver assistance systems, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Warning with Emergency Brake, and Side Collision Avoidance Support. This ensures a safe and efficient driving experience for passengers and operators.
The chassis is designed to accommodate bodies from various bodybuilders, with options for left- or right-hand drive configurations based on market and customer preferences. The charging port can be installed at convenient locations on the body, simplifying depot charging procedures.
The first Volvo BZR Electric coach chassis has already been outfitted by Carrus Delta (CD) and will soon be operational in Europe’s Nordic and Benelux markets. This new electric coach joins the ranks of other cutting-edge electric vehicles in the industry, such as the MAN Lion’s Coach E and Scania’s plug-in hybrid bus and coach chassis, highlighting the continued innovation and progress in sustainable transportation solutions.
