- Vinfast recalls 4,888 VF 8 electric SUVs due to faulty airbags
- The center airbag mounted to the driver’s seat may deploy improperly
- Airbag replacement will be provided free of charge by Vinfast
Vinfast has initiated a recall for specific VF 8 electric SUVs with defective airbags that pose a risk of injuring drivers.
The recall affects 4,888 vehicles manufactured between 2023 and 2025. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted that the center airbag positioned in the driver’s seat could malfunction during a side impact, potentially causing harm to the driver’s arm.
Vinfast has confirmed that all 4,888 recalled vehicles exhibit this airbag issue, which came to light following a safety investigation conducted by the NHTSA in June.

The issue stems from the original airbag design’s cushion shape and inflation angle, allowing deployment between the driver’s arm and torso under certain conditions. Vinfast collaborated with the NHTSA to redesign the center airbag with a different shape and deployment angle to prevent such occurrences.
Authorized dealers and service centers will replace the center airbag with the updated design at no cost to the vehicle owners. Vinfast, initially pursuing a direct-sales model similar to Tesla, transitioned to a franchised dealer model in late 2023.
Vinfast anticipates sending out owner notification letters on January 20, 2025. Owners can also reach out to the automaker’s customer service team at 1-833-503-0600 for additional information.

The VF 8 marks Vinfast’s entry into the U.S. market, but its introduction has faced challenges. Initial test drives of the prototype and production versions revealed developmental shortcomings, with concerns raised about the vehicle’s readiness for launch. Despite efforts to address issues with a Sony entertainment system update, Vinfast encountered setbacks in meeting sales targets and delayed plans for a North Carolina factory.
Nevertheless, Vinfast is proceeding with the launch of the three-row VF 9 SUV, aiming to overcome obstacles and establish a stronger presence in the automotive market.
