The United States Marine Corps is in the process of upgrading its fleet of medium tactical vehicles, aiming to replace them with new hybrid trucks that can operate almost silently. The goal is to reduce fuel consumption and enable silent watch operations, all while providing power to tools and weapons. While fully electric vehicles are not yet on the table, hybrids are seen as the next best option.
Mack Trucks and ND Defense are the two companies involved in the Marine Corps’ Medium Tactical Truck (MTT) program. Mack Trucks secured a $16 million contract to develop two prototypes, while ND Defense received $17.2 million to build their hybrid truck prototype. These prototypes are part of the second phase of the program, with completion expected by May of next year.
The new MTT family of vehicles will include a variety of tactical support trucks such as cargo, dump, wrecker, tractor, and resupply vehicles. The Marines are specifically looking for trucks with hybrid powertrains and the ability to provide silent power supply for operations. These trucks are expected to offer between 10 and 30 kilowatts of power to external systems.
Mack Trucks’ prototypes will be based on the Granite platform and tailored to meet the Marine Corps’ requirements. The company will produce a 4×4 configuration with a 10-foot cargo bed and a 6×6 configuration with a 20-foot bed. These vehicles will feature extensive onboard power storage and generation, as well as advanced safety features like collision avoidance and blind-spot detection.
On the other hand, ND Defense’s prototype will be based on the Atlas platform, available in various configurations from 4×2 to 8×8. The Marines have chosen to go hybrid for their next fleet upgrade to prioritize operational energy efficiency and reduce the reliance on traditional fuels. Stephen Bowdren, Program Executive Officer Land Systems, emphasized the importance of minimizing fuel consumption and exploring hybrid technology for military operations.
The Marine Corps’ MTT program is a significant step towards modernizing their fleet of medium tactical vehicles and embracing more sustainable and efficient transportation solutions. With Mack Trucks and ND Defense leading the way, the Marines are on track to introduce a new generation of hybrid trucks that will enhance their operational capabilities while reducing their environmental impact.
