Elon Musk’s The Boring Company has secured a major transportation project in Orlando that has the potential to revolutionize how visitors navigate between Universal’s theme parks. The project, which was approved by Universal’s Shingle Creek Transit and Utility Community Development District, involves the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a high-speed underground transit system connecting Universal Orlando Resort with the newly opened Epic Universe park, located approximately three miles away.
Currently, the only transportation option between the two destinations is buses, leading to traffic congestion around International Drive. The proposed underground transit system aims to alleviate this gridlock under a 25-year agreement, offering a more efficient and innovative point-to-point transportation solution.
Although the project is still in its early stages, The Boring Company has expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, “Though it is early, this is a great first step. Looking forward to working with the Shingle Creek Transit and Utility CDD in Orlando.” To qualify for the project, bidders were required to have a minimum of $75 million in bonding capacity, seven years of operational experience, and a track record of delivering similar-sized projects costing at least $25 million within the past 15 years.
If approved and completed, the Orlando loop project will add to The Boring Company’s growing portfolio, which includes the successful Vegas Loop in Las Vegas. The Vegas Loop has transported over two million passengers in Tesla vehicles through underground tunnels beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center since 2021, with plans for expansion and additional stations in the works.
The Orlando project follows The Boring Company’s first international venture in Dubai, where construction on a massive underground Loop project is set to begin soon. The company has also unveiled plans for a “Music City Loop” in Nashville, Tennessee, and established a Global Operations Control Center in Bastrop, Texas, to manage its expanding projects both in the U.S. and abroad.
With the opening of Epic Universe attracting significant foot traffic, a high-speed Tesla-powered tunnel system could become a headline attraction in its own right, pending approval and realization. The project holds the promise of transforming transportation within the Orlando area and enhancing the overall visitor experience between Universal’s theme parks.
