The Tesla Cybertruck has certainly stirred up strong opinions among car enthusiasts—it’s a vehicle that you either love or hate. Unfortunately for one U.K. resident, their passion for the Cybertruck has hit a roadblock as the hulking electric vehicle is not road-legal in the country. This week, Greater Manchester Police seized a Cybertruck, citing safety concerns due to its size.
According to a report by Sky News, the blacked-out Tesla truck, adorned with a red “Cyberbeast” label, was pulled over by the Greater Manchester Police. Under U.K. regulations, the Cybertruck is considered unsafe for road use because of its dimensions. This safety issue isn’t unique to Tesla, as other full-size pickups from manufacturers like Ram and Toyota have faced weight-based fees and potential bans as well.
In a social media post, the GMP stated, “The Tesla Cybertruck is not road legal in the U.K. and does not hold a certificate of conformity. Whilst this may seem trivial to some, legitimate concerns exist around the safety of other road users or pedestrians if they were involved in a collision with the Cybertruck.”
Despite being registered and insured abroad, the Tesla Cybertruck remains illegal to operate on U.K. roads and was confiscated under Section 165 of the U.K. Road Traffic Act 1988. The driver must prove ownership, provide valid insurance, and obtain a test certificate before the vehicle can be released.
Reports suggest that obtaining the necessary road safety certifications for the Cybertruck may prove challenging. While the vehicle has made appearances at events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K., it has not passed the country’s stringent safety tests.
It seems like the Tesla owner’s adventures with their Cybertruck have come to an abrupt halt. Without meeting U.K. road safety standards, it appears that ownership of the vehicle may no longer be possible. It’s a disappointing end to what was likely an exciting journey with the Cybertruck.
