Toyota has recently introduced the new Aygo X hybrid, which has quickly become Europe’s least polluting non-plug-in car. The revamped subcompact vehicle shares its hybrid powertrain with the larger Yaris Hybrid, offering more power than ever before. The Aygo X has undergone a complete makeover, both inside and out, resulting in a sleeker and more powerful vehicle.
With CO2 emissions of just 86 grams per kilometer, the Aygo X is now cleaner than its predecessor and even outperforms the Yaris Hybrid in terms of emissions. The hybrid system combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 116 hp and 104 lb-ft (141 Nm) of torque – a significant improvement over the previous combustion-only model.
To accommodate the new hybrid system, Toyota had to extend the Aygo X’s front overhang by almost three inches. However, the design of the front bumper cleverly conceals this change. The vehicle can now accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 10 seconds, a vast improvement over the previous model’s 15.5-second sprint time.
Aside from being more powerful, the new Aygo X is also quieter and smoother to drive. It comes equipped with more standard safety features and offers over-the-air updates for the first time. The vehicle’s manufacturing process has also been optimized to reduce its carbon footprint by 18%, making it more environmentally friendly.
Despite its improvements, the hybrid-only configuration of the Aygo X will come at a cost. The price of the vehicle is expected to increase, surpassing the entry point of the current model by just under €17,000 ($19,400). This could potentially make the Aygo X more expensive than some pure electric city cars, such as the BYD Dolphin Surf, which offers competitive pricing in countries with strong EV incentives.
Overall, the new Aygo X is a significant upgrade over its predecessor, offering a cleaner and more powerful driving experience. However, potential buyers will need to weigh the benefits of its hybrid technology against the higher price point compared to some electric alternatives. Toyota continues to innovate in the hybrid space, setting new standards for environmentally friendly transportation.
