Toyota’s bZ4X Electric SUV Gets Major Updates for 2026
While Toyota has faced criticism for not taking the electric vehicle revolution seriously, the bZ4X has unexpectedly become a hit in recent years. Sales have surged in the U.S. and Europe, with the vehicle now being the top-selling model in Norway. With a slew of upgrades for the 2026 model year, Toyota is showing that it’s listening to customer feedback and aiming to make the bZ4X a more competitive offering in the EV market.
The most significant updates to the bZ4X include new battery options, increased range, faster charging times, more power, and enhanced route planning capabilities. The SUV now offers a smaller 57.7 kWh battery for the front-wheel-drive model and a larger 73.1 kWh battery for both FWD and AWD variants. These changes translate to a maximum range of up to 573 km on the European WLTP cycle, a substantial improvement over the previous model.
In terms of performance, the bZ4X now boasts up to 343 hp, making it one of the most powerful Toyota models in Europe. The electric motors have been upgraded with silicon carbide semiconductors for improved power output. The AWD version also sees a doubling of its towing capacity to 3,306 lbs, catering to European buyers who need better hauling capabilities.
Charging has been a pain point for the bZ4X in the past, but Toyota has addressed this with the 2026 model. The onboard AC charger has been doubled to 22 kW for faster charging times, while DC fast charging remains at 150 kW. The vehicle now features battery preconditioning to optimize charging in cold weather conditions and a revamped navigation system with EV-specific route planning functionality.
Visually, the bZ4X has received minor updates to the front end for improved aerodynamics, while the interior has undergone a significant redesign for a more spacious and comfortable experience. The dashboard has been revamped with a 14-inch multimedia screen, relocated gear selector knob, and improved noise insulation systems.
While pricing and release dates for the updated bZ4X have not been announced yet, the vehicle is expected to hit European markets later this year. With Toyota’s commitment to introducing three more all-electric models by 2026, including a pickup truck and SUV, it’s clear that the automaker is finally taking EVs seriously. The future looks bright for Toyota’s electrified lineup, with the bZ4X leading the charge towards a more sustainable automotive future.
