The 2026 Ram Ramcharger is making waves in the world of electric trucks with its unique approach to battery usage. While the truck boasts a 91.8 kWh battery, only 69.7 kWh are usable. This decision was made to provide a consistent driving experience whether the truck is running on electric power or utilizing its gas engine.
In addition to its battery setup, the Ramcharger features a heavy-duty frame and 8-lug wheel hubs, allowing it to haul more weight compared to its traditional internal combustion engine counterpart. This focus on towing capability sets the Ramcharger apart from other electric trucks on the market.
The reasoning behind the limited usable capacity of the battery lies in the truck’s towing capabilities. By reserving a portion of the battery’s capacity for emergency situations, such as heavy acceleration or sustained towing, Ram ensures that the truck can perform optimally when needed most.
The Ramcharger utilizes a similar concept to extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) by incorporating a gas engine to generate electricity and supplement the battery’s power. This setup allows the truck to maintain consistent performance even when the battery is depleted, ensuring a smooth driving experience.
Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis emphasizes the truck’s focus on towing and its ability to provide a compromise-free solution for hauling heavy loads. With a reserve of nearly 23 kWh in the battery pack, the Ramcharger is equipped to handle the demands of towing, even when utilizing its full 647 horsepower and 610 ft/lbs of torque.
The decision to limit the usable capacity of the battery aligns with Stellantis’s strategy to keep costs down and make electric vehicles more accessible to consumers. By finding a balance between battery size and performance, Ram aims to offer a competitive towing solution with the Ramcharger.
As the Ramcharger prepares to hit the roads later this year, it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against other electric trucks from Rivian, Chevrolet, and Ford. With its unique approach to battery usage and towing capabilities, the Ramcharger is poised to make a significant impact in the electric truck market.
