An all-new MG4 EV has been revealed in China, just two years after the current model was introduced. The new MG4 is larger than its predecessor and showcases a completely different design aesthetic inspired by the Cyberster. It is uncertain whether this model will be exclusive to China or if it will replace the current MG4 in the European market as well.
China’s SAIC has been quick to capitalize on the MG brand, which it acquired after taking over the Nanjing Group in 2007. The MG6 was the first new vehicle launched in 2009, but it wasn’t until the arrival of the MG4 that MG models gained significant success. The MG4, known as the MG Mulan in China, entered production in 2022 and has been a hit both in China and Europe, where it was among the top-selling EVs in 2024.
The new MG4 is longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor, with a longer wheelbase as well. It departs from the sharp design of the outgoing model, featuring a more rounded shape with design elements borrowed from the MG Cyberster two-door EV.
While the exterior of the new MG4 has undergone a significant transformation, the interior details are yet to be revealed. It is expected that the interior will undergo substantial changes to align with the redesigned exterior.
In terms of performance, the base model of the new MG4 is equipped with a single electric motor powering the rear wheels, producing slightly less power than the previous model. However, with a lighter overall weight, the new MG4 is expected to deliver comparable or even better performance. Additionally, MG will introduce a more powerful Xpower dual-motor variant with over 400 horsepower and a sprint time to 62 mph of under 4 seconds.
The battery capacity of the new MG4 has not been disclosed yet, but the current entry-level model offers a range of up to 218 miles on a 49 kWh pack. The mid-range and long-range battery options provide increased capacities and ranges.
It is speculated that the updated model may primarily target the Chinese market, where the current MG4 is facing tough competition. The decision to launch a new model so soon after the previous one suggests an effort to enhance its competitiveness in the domestic market.
While it is unclear if the new MG4 will be available in Europe, MG is expected to provide clarity on this matter when the model is officially unveiled to the public. The manufacturer may choose to focus on the Chinese market initially, considering the success of the current MG4 in Europe.
