Peugeot fans have long awaited the return of the iconic 205 GTI, and now their wishes have been granted in the form of the new Peugeot 208 E-GTi. Unveiled at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, this electric hot hatchback is the first of its kind, embodying the spirit of the classic GTI in a modern, all-electric form.
The 205 GTI made automotive history 40 years ago, setting the standard for hot hatchbacks with its 1.6-liter and 1.9-liter versions. Since then, the GTI label has been synonymous with Peugeot’s performance models, including the 306, 206, 207, and of course, the 205, as well as their success in motorsports.
The Peugeot E-208 GTi boasts a striking design, featuring a bright red body color reminiscent of the iconic 205 GTI. The interior is sporty and stylish, with red accents throughout, paying homage to the original model.
Under the hood, the E-208 GTi is powered by an electric motor delivering 280 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. This translates to a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h. The 54 kWh battery provides a range of 350 km on the WLTP cycle and can be charged in just under five hours with a Level 2 charger.
The chassis of the E-208 GTi has been enhanced for sporty handling, with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, a rear stabilizer bar, and a specially calibrated steering system. The ESP system features a Sport mode for an optimized driving experience, while the compact steering wheel adds to the overall driving dynamics.
Despite the impressive performance and features, the price and launch date of the E-208 GTi have yet to be announced. However, it is expected to hit the market before the end of 2025, offering enthusiasts a blend of classic GTI charm with modern electric power.
