The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk, is making significant strides in reshaping urban transportation with its latest project in Dubai. This marks the company’s first tunnel project outside the United States, showcasing its global ambitions.
The Dubai Loop project is set to kick off with a pilot phase, as announced by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The initial phase will involve the construction of a 6.4km route with four stations, linking the Dubai International Financial Centre and Dubai Mall. This pilot phase is just the beginning, with plans to expand the project to a total of 22.2km and 19 stations, connecting key commercial and retail districts in Dubai.
The tunnels for the Dubai Loop project are specifically designed for vehicle transport, with a diameter of 3.6 meters. The RTA highlighted that advanced tunneling technologies will be utilized, enabling faster delivery, lower construction costs, and minimal impact on existing roads and utilities compared to traditional transport systems.
Like other Boring Company initiatives, the Dubai Loop will exclusively use Tesla vehicles to transport passengers through the underground network. The pilot route covers approximately four miles and aims to connect busy commercial and retail hubs in Dubai, with future plans to expand the network to nearly 14 miles.
The project was initially announced last fall, with an anticipated opening in the second quarter of 2026. This venture represents a significant expansion for The Boring Company beyond its U.S. operations, which currently include the Vegas Loop in Las Vegas and plans for a Nashville tunnel.
To support its expanding projects, The Boring Company has established a Global Operations Control Center in Bastrop, Texas. This center enables remote monitoring and management of tunneling projects across the U.S. and now internationally. The success of the Dubai Loop project could serve as a flagship example of Musk’s underground transit vision being implemented in major cities worldwide.
