The 2026 Jeep Cherokee has made its debut, marking a significant shift from a compact to a mid-size hybrid crossover with all-wheel drive capabilities. This new model is powered by a unique 1.6-liter gas engine paired with two electric motors and an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission (e-CVT). The innovative 350-volt hybrid powertrain was specifically designed for the Cherokee, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 62 mph on electric power despite the small size of the battery.
Built on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, the new Cherokee boasts impressive features such as a Miller Cycle four-cylinder 1.6-liter gas engine, two motor-generators, an e-CVT, and a 1.03-kilowatt-hour battery. The crossover can operate on electricity at speeds of up to 62 mph and achieve an estimated fuel economy of 37 miles per gallon on the combined cycle.
One of the standout features of the new Cherokee is its unique battery charging system, which does not require a plug. The battery is recharged while driving, with one motor-generator charging the pack during acceleration and the other during braking. Additionally, the high-voltage battery powers various pumps and the air conditioning compressor, reducing engine run time in slow-moving traffic.
Compared to the Toyota RAV4 hybrid, the Cherokee’s high-voltage pack is slightly smaller, with a total power output of 210 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. The Cherokee’s larger size translates into 30% more cargo room compared to the previous generation.
All-wheel drive is standard on the Cherokee, featuring Jeep’s Active Drive I 4×4 system with Selec-Terrain offering four drive modes – Auto, Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud. The Cherokee also boasts best-in-class approach and departure angles, along with eight inches of ground clearance and a breakover angle of 18.8 degrees.
Inside, the Cherokee comes equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, rain-sensing wipers, automatic emergency braking, a Level 2 driver assistance system, and rear park assist with rear automatic emergency braking.
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee will be available in four trim levels, with prices starting at $36,995 for the base model. The Limited and Overland trims will be priced higher and will be available later in 2025. The Cherokee’s engine will be produced at Stellantis’ Dundee Engine Plant in Michigan, with final assembly taking place at the Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico.
Overall, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee offers a unique combination of hybrid powertrain technology, advanced features, and impressive performance, making it a standout option in the mid-size crossover segment.
