Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory has achieved a significant production milestone, quietly surpassing 2,000 Megapack energy storage systems in 2025. This marks the facility’s inaugural full year of operation and highlights Tesla Energy’s rapid global expansion, as reported by People’s Daily Online.
Situated in the Lin-gang Special Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, the Shanghai Megafactory commenced production early in 2025. Serving as Tesla’s second major manufacturing site in the city following the Shanghai Gigafactory, it represents the company’s first dedicated energy storage factory outside the United States. Designed with exports in mind from the outset, a majority of the Megapacks have been shipped overseas, particularly to Europe and Australia — key markets for Tesla Energy’s utility-scale battery storage solutions.
Throughout the year, production at the Shanghai Megafactory escalated steadily. By late July, the factory had already rolled out its initial 1,000 Megapacks, accomplishing this feat in under six months. By year-end, output had doubled, with the additional 1,000 units manufactured over the final five months. This equates to an average production rate of approximately 200 Megapacks per month, underscoring a methodical and controlled ramp-up as Tesla optimized operations, workforce, and supply chains.
Once fully operational, the Shanghai Megafactory anticipates an annual production capacity of up to 10,000 Megapacks, equivalent to around 40 GWh of energy storage capacity. Each Megapack can store approximately 4 MWh of electricity and is engineered to bolster grid stability and facilitate the integration of large-scale renewable energy sources.
Shanghai now joins Tesla’s expanding Megapack manufacturing network. The company’s California Megafactory achieved a milestone by constructing its 10,000th Megapack towards the end of 2024. Furthermore, Tesla is currently in the process of establishing a third Megapack factory in Texas as demand for large-scale energy storage solutions continues to surge. With the Shanghai facility fully operational, Tesla Energy’s global ambitions are gaining momentum and attracting increased attention.
