Arevon Energy is set to power a massive new utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in California with Tesla’s Megapack battery storage systems. The $600 million Nighthawk Energy Storage Project in Poway, just outside San Diego, will have a capacity of 300 MW/1,200 MWh and is expected to be completed by January 2026.
This project will be able to provide power to up to 385,000 homes for four hours each day during peak demand, helping stabilize California’s energy grid and reduce the risk of brownouts and blackouts. Arevon, the developer behind this project, is also responsible for a 200 MW Tesla Megapack-powered BESS in Barrio Logan, near San Diego.
Arevon CEO Kevin Smith highlighted the project’s safety measures and advanced battery technology, stating that “Battery storage is the way of the future, and Arevon is pleased to bring this essential energy solution to Poway.” Tesla’s Megapack systems have been instrumental in grid-scale energy storage projects globally and are becoming a key component of a cleaner, more resilient energy grid in the U.S.
Construction of the Nighthawk facility is expected to create over 130 local jobs and generate over $30 million in payments to the local government over its lifespan. In support of growing demand, Tesla recently celebrated its 1,000th Megapack produced at its Shanghai Megafactory and signed a $4.3 billion deal with LG Energy Solution for U.S.-made LFP batteries.
The Nighthawk Energy Storage Project represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and reliable energy future for California, utilizing cutting-edge technology and renewable energy solutions to benefit the local community and the environment.
