Tesla has just unveiled its latest innovation in charging infrastructure with the introduction of the Folding Unit (FU) Superchargers. This new design aims to revolutionize the deployment process by doubling speed and cutting costs by over 20 percent. By combining Tesla’s powerful V4 cabinets with a modular and transport-friendly design, the company has simplified the installation process significantly.
One of the key benefits of the new Folding Unit Superchargers is the reduction in civil, electrical, and logistics expenses. The pre-assembled units eliminate the need for on-site DC busbar connections and do not require a Tesla service technician for commissioning, leading to substantial savings.
The hardware specifications of the Folding Unit Superchargers represent a significant advancement from previous generations. The V4 Cabinets are capable of delivering up to 500kW for passenger vehicles, such as the Cybertruck, and an impressive 1.2MW for the Tesla Semi. Each unit contains eight charging posts, allowing Tesla to ship 16 stalls per truck, an increase from the previous limit of 12. Furthermore, the units can be deployed in both folded back-to-back configurations or unfolded into a traditional side-by-side row, providing flexibility in layout options.
The announcement of the Folding Unit Superchargers comes as Tesla shifts its manufacturing focus at Gigafactory New York. The facility has transitioned to producing the more powerful V4 hardware, marking the end of a seven-year run for the V3 cabinets.
By streamlining the site commissioning process and increasing deployment efficiency, Tesla is paving the way for universal EV adoption. Max de Zegher, Tesla’s Director of Charging for North America, mentioned that this is just the first version of the folding units, with a third revision expected as early as next quarter.
As of the first quarter of 2026, Tesla’s global network has expanded to over 65,000 Superchargers across more than 6,200 stations. This growth demonstrates Tesla’s commitment to increasing charging density and accessibility, especially since opening the network to other brands.
Overall, the introduction of the Folding Unit Superchargers signifies a major milestone in Tesla’s mission to accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation. With faster deployment, lower costs, and improved efficiency, these innovative chargers are set to revolutionize the EV charging experience for Tesla owners and drivers worldwide.
