Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system has recently received high praise from one of the automotive industry’s most respected publications, MotorTrend. The magazine has awarded Tesla FSD with the prestigious Best Tech 2026 award for Driver Assistance, recognizing it as the most advanced system of its kind on the market today.
MotorTrend’s latest evaluation of Tesla’s FSD system highlighted its unmatched breadth, capability, and real-world usefulness. The publication, known for its critical stance on FSD in the past, acknowledged that Tesla’s latest version, v14, represents a significant leap forward in terms of performance and reliability. MotorTrend emphasized that many of the issues found in previous iterations of FSD have been addressed in the latest release, while the system’s capabilities have continued to expand.
One of the key factors that sets Tesla’s FSD apart from its competitors is its camera-only approach. While other systems rely on a combination of lidar, radar, and ultrasonic sensors, Tesla’s FSD operates solely on vision, utilizing neural networks trained on real-world driving data. MotorTrend noted that despite ongoing debates about the safety of this strategy, Tesla has managed to achieve remarkable results with fewer sensors, allowing FSD to navigate city streets, highways, and complex urban environments with ease.
In addition to its advanced technology, MotorTrend praised Tesla FSD for its user-friendly interface and innovative features, such as route learning, Auto Park, and automatic reverse parking into charging stalls. The system’s multiple driving profiles, ranging from Sloth Mode to Mad Max, were also highlighted as a testament to Tesla’s deep understanding of driver preferences.
Although Tesla FSD comes with a premium price tag of $8,000 upfront or $99 per month, MotorTrend concluded that the system’s unmatched utility justifies the cost. The publication emphasized that Tesla FSD offers a level of functionality that surpasses all other driver assistance systems currently available.
The recognition from MotorTrend comes at a time when Tesla is actively pursuing full autonomy. While Waymo One won MotorTrend’s 2026 Autonomous Vehicle award, Tesla is making significant strides in expanding its Robotaxi pilot program and testing “unsupervised” FSD in cities like Austin. Recent updates to the public FSD build have even enabled limited hands-free activities like texting under certain conditions, demonstrating the rapid evolution of the system.
After years of scrutiny and criticism, MotorTrend’s verdict is clear: Tesla FSD (Supervised) has reached a new level of excellence and currently leads the way in the world of driver assistance systems.
