Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology continues to impress, this time in China. A recent independent collision avoidance test conducted by Chinese media outlet DCARSTUDIO evaluated the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) of 36 vehicles, including Tesla models and those from various Chinese automakers like NIO, Xpeng, BYD, and Xiaomi. The test aimed to assess the performance of these systems across six real-world driving scenarios, such as highway driving and nighttime conditions.
Despite not being widely available in China due to regulatory delays, Tesla’s vision-based FSD system outperformed all others in the test. The refreshed Model 3 RWD and 2023 Model X Long Range each passed 5 out of 6 test scenarios, surpassing the performance of other vehicles tested. In contrast, many vehicles, including those using LiDAR-based systems, failed to match the capabilities of Tesla’s camera-only approach. This achievement is particularly impressive considering Tesla has no local training data in China due to restrictions on data export. However, CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla is incorporating data from test tracks and its world simulator to further enhance performance.
Musk’s tweet highlighted Tesla’s success in China despite the lack of local training data, emphasizing the company’s commitment to utilizing simulation and test track data to achieve optimal results. The test video showcased Tesla vehicles in action, with one viewer noting a potential disengagement of FSD during a Model X test, which could have impacted the vehicle’s score.
DCARSTUDIO has announced that an English version of the test video will be released soon. Tesla also recently shared footage of FSD successfully navigating London’s Magic Roundabout, awaiting regulatory approval in Europe and China. Musk remains optimistic about FSD approval in these regions, indicating that progress is expected in the near future.
Overall, Tesla’s FSD technology continues to set the standard for autonomous driving capabilities, showcasing the company’s dedication to innovation and excellence in the automotive industry.
