Tesla Rumored to be Working on Apple CarPlay Support
A recent report suggests that Tesla is still actively developing Apple CarPlay support, potentially putting an end to the speculation surrounding direct phone OS integrations into Tesla’s UI.
The update comes from Mark Gurman’s newsletter, where it is mentioned that Tesla is continuing to work on implementing the feature. Although there were expectations for CarPlay to be included in a recent holiday update, it seems that Tesla may have planned to release it at a later date.
Users can anticipate the possibility of seeing CarPlay in the upcoming spring update or later this year. Gurman hinted at more information to come on this topic in the near future.
While Tesla has introduced significant new features recently, such as custom Automations in China and improvements to its Dashcam, the addition of CarPlay could be the next big update for Tesla users.
Reports indicate that Tesla may take a more “windowed” approach to CarPlay integration, allowing it to coexist with Tesla’s native OS rather than completely taking over the primary display. If the feature is rolled out, users can expect CarPlay to function as a separate app window similar to Spotify or the browser.
Integration Strategy
Integrating CarPlay within a dedicated app window would allow Tesla to maintain control over its in-house software while providing users access to the iOS ecosystem for apps that Tesla does not currently support. This approach could enhance the driving experience by offering popular apps like Waze or Overcast without the need to use a phone while driving.
Moreover, by isolating CarPlay in its own app, Tesla can prevent third-party software from interfering with critical driving systems or safety software.
Standard vs Ultra
Reports suggest that Tesla is testing the standard wireless version of CarPlay rather than the newer CarPlay Ultra, which requires car manufacturers to relinquish control over certain aspects. Tesla’s decision to focus on the standard version may be influenced by market trends and consumer preferences.
While some Tesla owners may not see the need for CarPlay, studies show that a significant portion of car buyers consider its absence as a deal-breaker. CarPlay could offer advantages, especially for users who rely on apps like Waze that are not currently supported by Tesla.
Spring Update Anticipation
Tesla has been saving major UI changes and feature updates for its upcoming Spring Update, raising speculation that CarPlay could be included in this release. It is possible that the feature will be limited to newer models with the AMD MCU for enhanced performance.
