Tesla to Introduce ‘Low Power Mode’ in Future Update
A recent analysis of the latest Tesla app has unveiled that Tesla is in the process of developing a new feature called Low Power Mode for its vehicles. This feature has been highly requested by Tesla owners and is similar to the low power mode commonly found on smartphones.
The primary purpose of this new mode is to give Tesla owners more control over their vehicle’s standby energy consumption. This addresses the ongoing issue of vampire drain, which occurs when the car is parked for extended periods of time.
The discovery of this new feature was made through the identification of new text strings and command names within the code of the latest update. These findings provide insight into how the feature is expected to function.
Understanding Low Power Mode
The main function of Low Power Mode is to significantly reduce the standby energy usage of your Tesla. However, it will not completely shut down the vehicle, allowing for it to be accessed and awakened through the Tesla app.
Even in Low Power Mode, the vehicle will continue to consume energy for standby functions, screen activity, and interactions with the Tesla app. While many features added to Tesla vehicles only consume energy when the vehicle is active, there are some that continue to use energy even when the vehicle is not in use.
Examples of these features include Summon Standby, Sentry Mode, Cabin Overheat Protection, Scheduled Preconditioning, Keep Accessory Power On, and others. Low Power Mode is expected to operate similarly to Tesla’s Car Wash Mode, disabling certain features when needed, such as before leaving the vehicle for an extended period.
With the multitude of energy-consuming features available in parked vehicles, it is easy to overlook disabling some of them when preparing to leave for a trip or park the car for an extended period.
Low Power Mode will offer a simple solution by allowing owners to disable all features with a single button. This will include functions such as Keep Climate, Dog Mode, Camp Mode, Sentry Mode, Keep Accessory Power On, and potentially others.
Customizing Low Power Mode
When Low Power Mode is activated, Tesla will notify you if you attempt to enable certain features from the app, such as seat heaters, steering wheel heater, Sentry Mode, or climate keep modes. These features will remain disabled, but you can selectively enable them while in Low Power Mode.
Owners will have the ability to toggle Low Power Mode on or off from the Tesla app, and there may also be an in-vehicle toggle for this feature. Additionally, there is a command called command_name_SETDISCHARGELIMITACTION
that suggests owners may be able to set the battery percentage at which Low Power Mode is automatically enabled.
Given the increasing number of features in Tesla vehicles that can contribute to energy drain when parked, the introduction of Low Power Mode is a valuable addition. This feature is expected to be included in Tesla’s upcoming 2025.32 update, currently undergoing testing by employees.
