Elon Musk has officially launched TERAFAB, a groundbreaking $20-25 billion joint venture that brings together Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. This ambitious project aims to revolutionize the chip manufacturing industry and propel humanity towards becoming a multi-planetary species.
Describing it as “the most epic chip building exercise in history by far,” Musk envisions TERAFAB producing over one terawatt of AI compute annually. This output far surpasses the current global industry standard of roughly 20 gigawatts per year and is crucial for meeting the increasing demand for AI hardware.
The need for TERAFAB stems from the limitations of existing chip suppliers such as TSMC, Samsung, and Micron, who are unable to expand quickly enough to keep up with the exponential growth in demand for AI technology. Musk emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that either they build TERAFAB or face a shortage of essential chips needed for their projects.
The facility will manufacture two specialized chip families: Edge-inference AI5 and AI6 processors for Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots and Full Self-Driving systems, and high-power D3 chips designed for space environments. With annual production targets set between 100 and 200 gigawatts of terrestrial compute for robotics and 80% of chips dedicated to orbital AI data centers, TERAFAB aims to produce 100-200 billion custom AI and memory chips each year.
In terms of scale and strategy, Musk revealed that TERAFAB will be colossal, requiring a facility around 100 million square feet in size, equivalent to 15 Pentagons or three Central Parks. While an advanced technology fab will be established on the Giga Texas campus in Austin for rapid iteration, the full-scale TERAFAB will need thousands of acres and over 10 gigawatts of power, surpassing what Giga Texas can accommodate.
TERAFAB’s key applications include powering autonomous vehicle fleets, billions of Optimus robots, and creating the world’s largest data center in low-Earth orbit using SpaceX’s Starship. Musk sees TERAFAB as the final missing piece of the puzzle, representing vertical integration on an unprecedented scale and positioning his companies at the forefront of galactic-scale innovation.
With production ramping up towards 2027, TERAFAB is poised to accelerate an era of abundance and turn science fiction into reality. Musk’s vision for the future is clear: to lead humanity into a new era of technological advancement and pave the way for a multi-planetary civilization.
