Tesla’s Cybercab, the company’s dedicated robotaxi, is currently undergoing testing at its Giga Texas facility. This marks a significant step in Tesla’s autonomous vehicle development, following the recent unveiling of the Cybercab at the “We, Robot” event.
Drone footage shared by Joe Tegtmeyer captured the Cybercab being closely followed by a black Model 3 and a white Model Y, both equipped with specialized sensor suites. The Model Y was noted to have LIDAR, showcasing Tesla’s commitment to validating and calibrating their Full Self-Driving (FSD) software alongside the Cybercab.
Tegtmeyer observed the Cybercab being driven around the north and east sides of the factory, with a person likely inside operating with a modified game controller for safety. The heavily tinted windows on the Cybercab prevented any visibility inside, adding an air of mystery to the testing process.
Describing the Cybercab as “definitely smaller than the Model 3,” Tegtmeyer highlighted the compact scale of the vehicle, with multiple prototypes on-site for testing. The trailing Model 3 provided a sense of the Cybercab’s size, while also mimicking the Cybercab’s sensor system for data calibration during testing.
Overall, the detailed testing process at Giga Texas underscores Tesla’s commitment to ensuring the functionality and safety of the Cybercab. It’s exciting to see this innovative technology being put to the test in real-world conditions, paving the way for a future where autonomous vehicles can revolutionize transportation.
