Tesla’s sales of China-made electric vehicles took a hit in February, with the U.S. automaker selling 30,688 units wholesale. This marked a significant 51.47% decline from January’s 63,238 units and a 49.16% slide from the 60,365 vehicles sold wholesale in February 2024.
The data was reported by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), reflecting Tesla China’s performance in February 2025. The drop in sales can be attributed to the company’s transition to the new Model Y, an updated version of its popular electric crossover. As Tesla China prepared for the first deliveries of the new Model Y at the end of February, sales of the older Model Y classic units slowed down.
Overall, Tesla China’s wholesale sales for January and February 2025 totaled 93,926 units, showing a 28.74% decrease from the 131,812 units sold in the same period in 2024.
The new Model Y was officially introduced by Tesla China on January 10, with deliveries scheduled to begin in March 2025. However, deliveries of the new Model Y actually commenced on February 26, 2025. The updated version of the Model Y boasts several improvements, including an enhanced exterior design for a more aggressive look and an upgraded interior to address previous complaints about the cabin. The new Model Y also features improvements in the suspension system and sound isolation, enhancing the overall ride quality.
Earlier reports from Bloomberg News in January suggested that Tesla China would temporarily halt production on some of Giga Shanghai’s Model Y and Model 3 lines to optimize production equipment for the updated Model Y. This move indicates Tesla’s commitment to improving its manufacturing processes to meet the demand for its electric vehicles in the Chinese market.
With the Model Y being Tesla’s top-selling vehicle in China, it will be interesting to see how well the new version performs in the country’s competitive electric vehicle market. The updates and enhancements in the new Model Y are expected to attract more customers and drive sales for Tesla in the region.
