Exciting News: Tesla Teases Powershare Expansion with New Gen 3 Mobile Connector
With the recent debut of the Cybertruck, Tesla also quietly introduced a new Mobile Connector that comes standard with every Foundation-Series Cybertruck. Initially thought to be a mere aesthetic update, the new Mobile Connector actually hints at a bigger development.
Introducing the New Mobile Connector
The third-generation Mobile Connector is now available on the Tesla Shop, replacing the older version. Priced at $300 USD, up from $275 USD, the new connector resembles a mini Wall Connector, complete with a green LED strip running down its length. While the packaging and included items remain mostly unchanged, there is one intriguing addition.
Tesla suggests that the new Mobile Connector can be paired with a “Powershare Outlet Adapter” to power electronic devices. Although the Outlet Adapter is not currently listed on the Tesla Store, it is expected to be released in the near future.
While no images of the Outlet Adapter are available, it is described as a unique plug that attaches to the top of the mobile connector, similar to the 110V and 220V plugs. Instead of a male plug for wall outlets, it will feature various outlets at the end.
Expanding Powershare Capability
Notably, the webpage for the new Mobile Connector states that “Powershare is currently only available with the Cybertruck.” This suggests that Tesla may soon introduce Powershare functionality to other vehicles, such as the Model Y or older models.
Unlike the Powershare capable Wall Connector used by the Cybertruck to power a home, the Mobile Connector is designed for individual device power since it cannot match the Wall Connector’s power output.
If Powershare is extended to additional vehicles, it remains to be seen whether it will support Powershare Home Backup through a Tesla Gateway or if it will be limited to the Mobile Connector’s Powershare Outlet Adapter.
While the Cybertruck’s enhanced power conversion circuit enables AC power output, it is uncertain if other vehicles can support this feature. Tesla may need to use an inverter to convert the vehicle’s DC power to AC power for household devices.
Even if older vehicles only gain Powershare capabilities through the new Mobile Connector and Powershare Outlet, it is still a significant benefit for Tesla owners. Providing approximately 10 kW of power, equivalent to a small gas generator, the Mobile Connector can power tools, charge devices, run 110v appliances like refrigerators, and more.
In the interim, for those eager to utilize their vehicle’s battery as a portable power bank without a Cybertruck, consider exploring the Vortipower V2L VP20 device, which offers similar capabilities by connecting to the NACS port for 120V and 240V power.
