Tesla Software Update Preference: Standard Vs Advanced [Musk Confirms Tesla Uses It]
In the Software tab of your Tesla vehicle’s settings, you have the option to choose your software update preference. You can select between Standard and Advanced, which determines how quickly you receive updates. Tesla explains this feature as follows:
“[Car name] will regularly receive over-the-air software updates that add new features and enhance existing functionality. Select ADVANCED if you’d like [car name] to receive new software updates as soon as they become available for its configuration. Note: The latest software version will vary based on vehicle configurations including hardware and geography.”
Essentially, you have the choice to receive updates more frequently and access new features earlier, or opt for a more stable software build with delayed feature releases.
Many have considered this option to be obsolete, assuming it was a remnant from Tesla’s public Early Access programs in 2018. However, Elon Musk recently confirmed that Tesla still uses this preference to determine update distribution.
In a tweet on X, Musk mentioned that Tesla is encountering some issues with FSD v12.5, but the update will be pushed to those who have selected ‘Advanced’ releases. Whether Tesla has always utilized this preference or has recently resumed its use remains unclear. If you want to receive the latest updates sooner, it’s advisable to set your preference to Advanced.
The Software Update Preference setting can be found under Controls > Software, where you can choose between Advanced and Standard options, with Standard being the default. Tesla has the capability to send updates based on various factors, including configuration, region, model, and now, software update preference. By opting for Advanced, you may receive updates quicker and benefit from more frequent bug fix releases.
It’s reassuring to know that Tesla is still utilizing this option, although additional transparency regarding their release process would be appreciated.
