During the We, Robot event, Tesla offered a sneak peek of its innovative wireless charging system. Although the slides were not visible on the live stream (around the 16:35 mark), attendees were able to capture the content displayed on screen.
Previously, we delved into Tesla’s patent for Wireless Charging and the announcement that FSD would support automatic docking for the Wireless Charger. Now, let’s take a closer look at what Tesla has revealed.
Wireless Charging
Tesla showcased the physical wireless charger, which appears to be a large square device with a cable attached to the back. The design is simplistic yet functional, easy to maintain, and ensures precise alignment for optimal charging.
Additionally, Tesla shared intriguing details on the next slide. Currently, Tesla’s Level II Wall Connector operates at 48 amps and 240 volts, delivering 11.5kW of power for vehicle charging with an efficiency of approximately 99.33%. The wireless charger is expected to operate at a higher amperage – estimated at 80+ amps and 240 volts – providing an impressive 20+kW of power to the vehicle.
While the exact efficiency of Tesla’s wireless charging system remains unknown, the convenience it offers could significantly boost EV adoption rates. With wireless charging eliminating the need to remember to plug in, Tesla may gain a competitive edge in the market.
The Cybertruck is set to be the first consumer vehicle from Tesla that can be retrofitted for wireless charging, indicating a major step forward in vehicle charging technology. We eagerly anticipate further developments in this area from Tesla.
