Tesla Considering Apple Wallet Car Key Support
An examination of the latest Tesla App (v4.52.0) has uncovered hints of a potential new feature: Harmony Wallet Key Cards.
While the focus seems to be on the Chinese market with integration into Huawei’s HarmonyOS ecosystem, Tesla’s history of introducing features in China first could suggest future support for Apple and Android platforms.
The Discovery
The code found in v4.52.0 suggests the inclusion of a Harmony Wallet Key Card, allowing HarmonyOS users to add their Tesla keycard directly to their phone’s wallet system.
This feature, known as a “native” car key, enables the phone to function as a secure key card or proximity key without the Tesla app needing to be active. It also provides additional capabilities like Tap-to-Unlock and deeper system-level integration.
While Tap-to-Unlock is already accessible on Android devices, system-level integration would extend key functionality to iOS devices even when the phone is powered off.
Considering Huawei’s strong presence in China and the growing interest in NearLink technology for vehicles like the Huawei/Seres AITO M9, Tesla’s move aligns well with the preferences of the Chinese market.
Following the Trend
The timing of this discovery is significant in contrast to Tesla’s competitors in North America. Rivian, for example, recently introduced native digital key support for Apple Wallet and Google Wallet in its latest update.
Rivian’s implementation, based on the Car Connectivity Consortium standard, offers various advantages over traditional app-based Bluetooth keys, including extended usability after the device’s battery dies and secure sharing capabilities.
The Demand for Apple & Google Support
Tesla owners have long requested native support for Apple and Google Wallet. While Tesla’s Phone Key is generally reliable, a native wallet key would provide a more seamless and consistent experience for digital vehicle access.
With the inclusion of Harmony Wallet code in the app, Tesla demonstrates its ability and willingness to explore these integrations. The question now is whether this move is solely focused on China or if it signals upcoming support for Apple and Google Wallet.
