Tesla Unveils Centralized Payment Kiosks for V4 Superchargers
Tesla has quietly introduced a major update to its new V4 Supercharger stations by implementing centralized payment kiosks, replacing individual credit card terminals.
Recent photos and reports reveal that certain new V4 sites have done away with individual contactless payment readers, opting for a single standalone kiosk to serve the entire cluster of chargers.
Enhanced Centralized Experience
Over the past year, V4 Superchargers have been equipped with small screens and credit card readers in each stall to comply with government regulations. However, at these new locations, the individual readers have been removed. Instead, drivers can pay by card at a central pedestal with a large touchscreen terminal. Users simply plug in their vehicle, pay at the kiosk to authorize the session, and can also monitor the session through the interface.
Revised Kiosk Pricing
One crucial detail to note is the pricing at the kiosk, which has been reported to be approximately double the existing Tesla rate. This pricing strategy encourages users to download the app and create an account to access discounted rates.
Reasons for the Change
The shift to centralized kiosks addresses several challenges for Tesla. Centralized payment terminals are more durable and easier to maintain compared to individual readers. Furthermore, by removing high-security payment hardware from every post, Tesla can reduce build costs while still meeting compliance regulations.
