Tesla has issued a recall for 239,382 electric vehicles due to potential issues with the rearview camera display. The affected models include 2024-2025 Tesla Model 3 and Model S sedans, as well as 2023-2025 Model X and Model Y crossovers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified circuit board short-circuiting as the root cause of the problem, which can result in a loss of rearview camera functionality.
According to the NHTSA, the short-circuiting is triggered by reverse current during startup. This can lead to a blank screen when shifting into reverse, requiring drivers to rely on mirrors and shoulder checks while backing up. While only 2% of the recalled vehicles are expected to have this defect, Tesla has already received 887 warranty claims and 68 field reports related to the issue.
To address the problem, Tesla has released a free over-the-air (OTA) software update and will replace affected computers in the vehicles at no cost. The automaker has not reported any collisions, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue. Owners can expect to receive notification letters by March 7, 2025, and contact customer service at 877-798-3752 for more information.
Although some recalls can be resolved with OTA updates, Tesla has faced hardware-related recalls in the past. The NHTSA is currently investigating Tesla electric vehicles equipped with the Actually Smart Summon remote driving feature, following reports of crashes. Additionally, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system is under scrutiny after a fatality and multiple crashes.
It is important for Tesla owners to stay informed about recalls and take necessary actions to ensure the safety and functionality of their vehicles.
