Tesla’s Model Y has made headlines in Australia, taking the top spot as the best-selling passenger vehicle for the month of September, according to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). The VFACTS report revealed that Australians purchased a total of 106,891 new vehicles in September 2025, marking a 6.3% increase from August and a significant 10.1% increase from the same time last year. Notably, electric vehicles saw a surge in popularity, capturing a record 11.3% of the market.
Leading the charge in the EV segment was the Tesla Model Y, which recorded an impressive 3,927 sales during the month. This figure represented a significant jump from the previous year, more than doubling its sales from September 2024. The Model Y’s success propelled it to third place overall across all vehicles, trailing only behind the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger pickups. Additionally, it secured the top position in the passenger vehicle segment. Tesla as a brand sold a total of 4,663 vehicles in Australia for the month, marking a substantial 76% increase compared to the previous year and positioning the company in ninth place among all automakers, surpassing MG, Subaru, and Chery.
The official Tesla Australia and New Zealand Twitter account, @TeslaAUNZ, celebrated the Model Y’s achievement as the best-selling passenger vehicle in Australia for September. The company’s success was not limited to sales figures alone, as September also witnessed significant milestones in the region. Tesla introduced the refreshed Model Y Performance at the beginning of the month, featuring updated styling and enhanced features, catering to the discerning Australian and New Zealand markets. Later in September, Tesla initiated the public rollout of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in Australia, following a soft media launch in late August. The rapid adoption of the driver-assistance system was evident, with Australians and New Zealanders collectively driving over 1 million kilometers using the technology within a short span of time.
The increasing adoption of electric vehicles and the introduction of refreshed models and cutting-edge driver-assist technologies underscore Tesla’s growing presence in the mainstream auto market in Australia. The Model Y’s stellar performance in September serves as a testament to the brand’s rapid expansion and solidification of its position in the Australian automotive landscape.
