Tesla’s upcoming budget-friendly Model Y has once again made headlines, this time thanks to a revealing backend code on the company’s website. The new variant, officially named the “Model Y Standard,” is expected to have a starting price of $39,990.
This latest leak aligns with previous rumors and sightings of the cheaper Model Y. Just recently, a camouflaged prototype of the vehicle was spotted undergoing real-world testing in Palo Alto, California. This typically indicates that the launch of the new model is imminent. In fact, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed during the Q2 2025 earnings call that production of the Model Y Standard had already commenced, with a full ramp-up scheduled for later this year.
Further details about the stripped-down Model Y, internally referred to as “E41,” were uncovered in Tesla’s firmware last month. These findings hinted at several features being removed to achieve a lower price point. The recent website leak has provided additional insights into what to expect from the Model Y Standard.
According to the backend code, the Model Y Standard will boast a redesigned front fascia with single-part headlights, a front bumper camera, and a closed glass roof in place of the panoramic glass roof. The interior will feature a simpler layout with textile décor, a manually adjustable steering wheel, and manual air vents in the second row. Some premium features like the HEPA filter and the second-row touchscreen have been omitted. However, the center 15.4-inch display remains intact, while cargo space is slightly reduced compared to the Long Range model at 75 cu. ft.
With a starting price of $39,990, the Model Y Standard is set to undercut the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive by $5,000. While this discount may seem appealing, it remains to be seen whether the cost savings justify the removal of certain features. As Tesla gears up for the launch of its more affordable Model Y variant, anticipation continues to grow among consumers eager to experience the electric automaker’s latest offering. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development.
