Jay Leno recently had the opportunity to get an exclusive look at the newly refreshed Tesla Model Y on his show Jay Leno’s Garage. During the segment, Tesla’s chief designer Franz von Holzhausen and VP of engineering Lars Moravy walked Leno through the updates and enhancements made to the popular electric SUV.
The refreshed Model Y retains its iconic design but brings significant improvements in aerodynamics, ride comfort, and technology. One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a 7-seater version of the Model Y, as well as a Performance model, which Moravy confirmed during the show.
In terms of design and aerodynamics, Tesla has streamlined the front of the Model Y, drawing inspiration from the Cybertruck and Cybercab. The redesigned front bumper and unique headlights not only improve aerodynamics but also give the car a more distinctive look. The drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.22, depending on the wheel and tire configuration. Additionally, Tesla has introduced a groundbreaking rear light design featuring an indirect lighting system that makes the Tesla logo and rear light bar glow without visible LED strips.
The performance and driving experience of the Model Y have also been enhanced. Despite its lighter build, the Model Y feels more stable and planted on the road. Tesla has reworked the suspension, making the chassis 5% stiffer while improving ride comfort. The launch edition dual-motor variant of the Model Y produces an impressive 455 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds.
On the tech front, Tesla has added Matrix-style adaptive headlights that automatically adjust brightness to prevent blinding oncoming traffic. The Model Y now also features a front camera for a full 360-degree view while parking, ambient lighting with a million color options, improved sound insulation, and new front seats with heating and ventilation. One significant change that Leno appreciated was the return of turn signal stalks, a decision influenced by customer feedback.
In terms of battery and charging technology, Tesla continues to refine its battery technology to ensure longer life and faster charging times. The company has introduced new software that uses heat from the car’s components to warm up the battery before charging, reducing winter charge times by 75%.
During the episode, Tesla’s team hinted at the future of autonomous driving, with test fleets already running in Texas. Moravy also alluded to Tesla’s upcoming RoboTaxi service, expected to launch this year.
While Tesla has not announced an official release date for the refreshed Model Y, the upgrades and enhancements showcased on Jay Leno’s Garage indicate that the Model Y is set to maintain its status as the world’s best-selling car. With its innovative design, improved performance, and advanced technology, the refreshed Model Y is sure to impress Tesla enthusiasts and car enthusiasts alike.
