California-based UP.FIT, a division of Tesla tuner Unplugged Performance, has recently unveiled a unique project at the 2024 SEMA show in Las Vegas – a Tesla Model S Plaid transformed into a police car. This customized Plaid police cruiser is set to join the community outreach program of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, marking another innovative conversion by UP.FIT.
This isn’t the first time UP.FIT has ventured into creating law enforcement vehicles out of Teslas. Previously, the division worked on a Cybertruck police cruiser and has now applied similar modifications to the Model S Plaid. The vehicle features a new wiring harness that integrates police lights, strategically mounted to reduce aerodynamic drag without the need for a traditional light bar.
In addition to the police lights, the Plaid police car comes equipped with a push bar, high- and low-frequency sirens, and a public address system. While these additions add some weight to the vehicle, Unplugged Performance estimates a minor decrease in range to 345 miles, compared to the standard Plaid’s 359-mile range.
Under the hood, the Tesla Model S Plaid police car retains the stock tri-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, delivering an impressive 1,020 hp. This power enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 1.9 seconds, as claimed by Tesla. To enhance performance further, UP.FIT installed lighter wheels and upgraded brakes on the police cruiser.
While Tesla doesn’t offer factory police packages, other automakers like General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis have ventured into the realm of electric police cars. GM offers a police version of the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Ford has the F-150 Lightning for law enforcement use, and even built a limited number of Mustang Mach-E police cars for the New York Police Department. Stellantis is also gearing up to introduce a police version of the Dodge Charger Daytona.
The conversion of a Tesla Model S Plaid into a police car by UP.FIT showcases the potential for electric vehicles in law enforcement and highlights the versatility and adaptability of EV platforms. As electric vehicles continue to gain traction in various sectors, it’s exciting to see innovative projects like this one pushing the boundaries of what is possible with sustainable transportation solutions.
