In a surprising turn of events, Tesla Model S and Model X sales have reached levels that have not been seen in five years. The electric car company reported its sales figures for Q4, confirming that it successfully reached its 1.8 million unit production and delivery goal for the year. Despite the dominance of the Model 3 and Model Y in the sales mix, the Model S and Model X managed to make a comeback in the final quarter of 2023.
During the quarter, the Model S and Model X were grouped with the Cybertruck, which had just started initial deliveries in late November. While the Cybertruck’s contributions were minimal, the all-electric pickup did not significantly impact the overall sales figures. The company delivered a total of 22,969 “other models,” including the Model S and Model X, marking a five-year high in sales for these premium vehicles.
The sales numbers for the Model S and Model X have fluctuated over the years, ranging from as low as 2,000 units in Q1 2021 to as high as 19,225 units in Q2 2023. Despite their small contribution to Tesla’s overall sales, CEO Elon Musk had previously mentioned that the vehicles were being produced more for sentimental reasons than for their commercial significance. Musk praised the Model S for its performance and safety features, acknowledging its status as a top-tier luxury car.
The resurgence in sales for the Model S and Model X can be attributed to lower prices for these premium vehicles, as well as the Model X’s Long Range configuration qualifying for tax credits, making it more appealing to consumers. With the renewed interest in these models, it will be interesting to see if Tesla continues to prioritize their production in the coming years.
As Tesla continues to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, the revival of Model S and Model X sales serves as a reminder of the company’s commitment to innovation and excellence in the automotive industry. It will be fascinating to see how these iconic models evolve and adapt to the changing landscape of electric vehicles in the future.
