Tesla’s Model 3 has once again claimed the title of the most “American-made” vehicle for 2025, as per the annual index released by Cars.com. The index ranks around 400 current model-year vehicles based on factors such as assembly location, parts sourcing, and manufacturing employment footprint. Tesla secured the top four positions on the list with the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, with the Model 3 leading the pack.
All Tesla vehicles sold in the U.S. are manufactured at the company’s factories in Fremont, California, and Austin, Texas. This year’s ranking marks a significant comeback for the Model 3, which had slipped to 21st place in the previous year. The Model 3 reclaimed the top spot following a recent redesign that increased its U.S. and Canadian parts content from 50% to 75%.
In 2023, Tesla also dominated Cars.com’s American-Made Index, holding all four top positions. Other vehicles in the top 10 for 2025 include the Jeep Gladiator, Kia EV6, Honda Ridgeline, Odyssey, and Passport, along with the Volkswagen ID.4. While Tesla’s U.S. production footprint is evident, the index may not accurately reflect tariff risks or the true “American-ness” of a vehicle. Automakers like Ford and GM did not make it into the top 10 but had multiple models featured on the full list.
Despite the higher average price of American-built cars compared to vehicles assembled in Mexico, consumer sentiment towards American-made vehicles remains positive. Nearly 60% of Americans are willing to pay up to 10% more to purchase an American-made vehicle. Whether this sentiment translates into increased sales remains to be seen.
In April, Tesla led U.S. EV sales even as the market experienced a 4.4% decline compared to the same period last year. The electric vehicle market continues to evolve, with Tesla maintaining its position as a key player in the industry. With the Model 3 securing the top spot as the most “American-made” vehicle for 2025, Tesla’s commitment to domestic manufacturing and production is evident.
