Tesla Model 3 with LFP Battery Pack Shows Minimal Degradation After 110,000 Miles
One Tesla Model 3 owner has shared his experience with the LFP battery pack, revealing that even after driving 110,000 miles, the battery shows minimal degradation. Despite regularly charging the car to 100% and using DC fast charging, the battery has held up well over time.
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries offer advantages such as lower production costs and minimal degradation, even when fully charged regularly. While LFP batteries may have a lower energy density compared to nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cells, the ability to charge them to 100% without significant degradation makes them a popular choice for EV owners.
In a video shared by Brandon Kipp on YouTube, a 2022 Tesla Model 3 equipped with an LFP battery pack has been driven nearly 110,000 miles without any major issues. The car, used for ride-sharing in Texas, has undergone extensive DC fast charging and city driving.
Despite charging the car with 22 megawatt-hours of energy through DC fast charging and 8 MWh through AC charging, the owner reports that the drivetrain is original and no repairs have been necessary, apart from regular maintenance like new tires and washer fluid.
The battery’s usable capacity was originally 57.5 kWh, and after accounting for the total driving range post-charge and a long trip, the theoretical battery degradation is just 5%. The maximum driving range has decreased from 272 miles to 258 miles, showing minimal degradation over time.
Other Tesla Model 3 owners have reported similar results with LFP batteries, with some experiencing as low as 2% degradation after 20,000 miles and around 5% after 85,000 miles. The cost-effectiveness and durability of LFP batteries make them a compelling choice for EV owners.
While LFP batteries may offer a lower energy density compared to NMC batteries, their ability to withstand regular full charges without significant degradation makes them a reliable option for long-term use. Tesla has discontinued the LFP-powered Model 3 in the US, but the success stories of owners like Brandon Kipp showcase the longevity and reliability of LFP battery packs.
