Tesla enthusiasts have long been clamoring for a game-changing feature: native mobile wallet car keys. Recent reports suggest that Tesla may be on the brink of delivering on this highly requested functionality.
A teardown of the latest Tesla mobile app update (v4.52.0) by Not a Tesla App has unveiled references to “Harmony Wallet Key Cards.” While the name doesn’t explicitly mention Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, the discovery is significant and could have far-reaching implications.
Initially targeting the Chinese market, the Harmony Wallet feature is designed to integrate with Huawei’s HarmonyOS ecosystem and Huawei Wallet. This innovative approach would enable a Tesla key card to reside directly within the phone’s system-level wallet, eliminating the need for the Tesla app to run continuously in the background. This type of setup, known as a “native” digital car key, offers numerous advantages over traditional app-based Bluetooth keys, including Tap-to-Unlock functionality via NFC, deeper system-level integration, and the ability to operate even when a phone’s battery is critically low or completely drained.
While the Harmony Wallet feature appears tailored for China, Tesla has a track record of introducing new features in its largest overseas market before expanding globally. This has led to speculation that Apple Wallet and Google Wallet support could be on the horizon for Tesla owners worldwide.
The timing of these developments is particularly noteworthy, as Rivian recently rolled out native digital key support for Apple Wallet and Google Wallet alongside its upcoming Autonomy+ driver-assistance system. Rivian’s implementation utilizes the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) standard and offers features such as secure key sharing via iMessage and WhatsApp, Apple Watch compatibility, and extended functionality even after a phone’s battery dies.
Tesla owners have long been vocal about their desire for native wallet key functionality. While Tesla’s Phone Key is generally reliable, it relies on the app running in the background, which can drain battery life and be subject to power-saving measures imposed by mobile operating systems. The introduction of a native wallet key would eliminate these challenges, providing a seamless and efficient user experience.
These potential advancements align with a broader trend of Tesla exploring greater integration with Apple’s ecosystem. Recent reports suggest that Tesla is considering adding Apple CarPlay support, while a previous app update introduced Find My-style vehicle tracking reminiscent of Apple’s tracking features.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, the presence of Harmony Wallet code within Tesla’s mobile app indicates that the company is actively exploring native wallet integrations. Whether this initiative remains limited to China or paves the way for Apple and Google Wallet support on a global scale remains to be seen. Exciting times lie ahead for Tesla enthusiasts eagerly awaiting these cutting-edge features.
