Tesla Introduces Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Support to Model Y Performance
Tesla’s latest Model Y Performance, launched on September 30th in the US, now comes equipped with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities, bridging the technological gap between it and the Cybertruck.
This exciting addition enhances the utility of Tesla’s popular vehicle by enabling owners to extract power directly from the high-voltage battery for various applications.
How V2L Works and What You Can Power
The V2L system on the Model Y Performance is designed for ease of use and portability. With the Tesla Outlet Adapter for the Mobile Connector, owners can draw 2.4kW (2,400 watts) of power at 120V and 20A AC from the vehicle’s charge port. This power output allows for a range of practical uses, from camping and DIY projects to emergency situations during power outages.
Distinguishing V2L in Model Y Performance and Cybertruck
While the Model Y Performance offers a two-outlet V2L solution, the Cybertruck boasts a comprehensive PowerShare system with five dedicated onboard outlets, including a powerful 240V 40A plug in the bed. The Cybertruck’s capabilities extend to powering an entire home, showcasing its superior power output compared to the Model Y Performance.
The Absence of V2H
Although the Model Y Performance now supports V2L, there is no mention of full Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) backup capability. This feature remains exclusive to the Cybertruck, which, when paired with additional components, can provide up to 11.5kW of power for home backup during outages.
Potential Expansion to Other Vehicles
It is uncertain whether V2L will be extended to other Tesla models in the future. The inclusion of this feature in the Model Y Performance suggests advancements in battery technology or hardware that may limit compatibility with older vehicles. However, this enhancement positions the Model Y Performance as a compelling option for buyers seeking added functionality.
With the integration of V2L, along with other incentives such as free exterior paint options and interior upgrades, the Model Y Performance stands out despite its premium price over the Long Range AWD model. This development signifies that bi-directional capabilities are becoming mainstream in Tesla’s lineup.
