Tesla has recently introduced the Model Y L in Australia and New Zealand, catering to larger families with its long-wheelbase variant. This marks a significant expansion of Tesla’s lineup in these markets, offering a three-row seating configuration for the first time since the discontinuation of the Model X locally in 2020.
The Model Y L is not just a seating upgrade; it features a chassis that has been extended by 150mm to create a genuine 2+2+2 six-seat layout. This configuration replaces the second-row bench with individual captain’s chairs, providing easier access to the third row and a more luxurious cabin experience.
One of the standout features of the Model Y L is its increased interior volume, offering a massive 2,539 litres of total cargo space with all rear seats folded. Despite its larger size, the Model Y L boasts an impressive range of 681 km (WLTP) on a single charge, making it the range leader in Tesla’s lineup. The SUV is equipped with a higher-capacity battery and features a dual-motor All-Wheel Drive system that accelerates from 0–100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds.
The Model Y L also introduces several new features and technologies to the region, including Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing owners to power external appliances, tools, or e-bikes using the car’s battery. This feature is particularly useful for camping and outdoor activities.
Key highlights of the Model Y L include heated and ventilated seats in the first and second rows, advanced electronic damping and adaptive suspension, a larger front touchscreen, a new rear display, and a 19-speaker immersive audio system. Safety features have also been enhanced with additional airbags for the rear rows to maintain the SUV’s 5-star ANCAP safety rating.
In terms of pricing and availability, the Model Y L starts from $74,900 AUD in Australia and $83,900 NZD in New Zealand, before on-road costs. Tesla is also introducing a new “Cosmic Silver” exterior paint and a “Zen Grey” interior theme with this launch. Orders are now open on the Tesla website, with the first deliveries expected in the second quarter of 2026.
