Tesla has recently introduced its new in-car conversational AI, Grok, to Canadian owners as part of the latest software update 2025.38. Developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, Grok allows Canadian drivers to interact directly with the AI inside their vehicles for the first time.
The rollout of software version 2025.38 began this week, following months of anticipation since Grok was initially made available to U.S. Tesla owners with version 2025.26 back in July. This update also includes the addition of 3D buildings and cityscapes to Tesla’s navigation maps.
Interestingly, Grok itself seems unaware of its Canadian release, as it reportedly tells users in Canada that the rollout is delayed due to regulatory hurdles. This likely refers to Canada’s proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA), part of Bill C-27, which prompted xAI to take a cautious approach before launching in Canada.
To utilize Grok, Tesla owners will need Premium Connectivity or an active Wi-Fi connection, as well as a vehicle equipped with an AMD Ryzen processor (HW3 or HW4). Older models with Intel Atom chips are not currently supported, although Tesla suggests that the feature may become available on more vehicles through future over-the-air updates.
Once activated, drivers can interact with Grok by selecting it through the App Launcher or long-pressing the voice button on the steering wheel. Grok offers various personality modes, such as Storyteller and Unhinged, and focuses on natural conversation, humor, and general-knowledge assistance rather than controlling car features. However, future updates are expected to enhance its integration with Tesla’s ecosystem, enabling Grok to handle navigation, settings, and entertainment tasks more seamlessly than current voice commands.
All conversations with Grok are processed anonymously and not linked to a specific driver or vehicle, according to Tesla. Musk has hinted at introducing a dedicated wake word for Grok in the near future, which would make interactions even smoother.
Overall, the introduction of Grok to Canadian Tesla owners marks an exciting advancement in in-car AI technology, offering a glimpse into the future of connected vehicles. With further updates and enhancements on the horizon, Grok is set to become an indispensable part of the Tesla driving experience.
