Tesla has introduced a new feature in their latest update in China, version 2024.26.9, which includes improvements such as Automatic Emergency Braking and YouTube Music. However, one standout feature exclusive to China is the enhanced blind spot indicator. This feature lights up to warn drivers of obstacles when opening their doors in the new Model 3 and Cybertruck.
Blind Spot Door Warnings
With the latest update, Tesla has added functionality that illuminates the blind spot warning indicator in the front speakers when a vehicle door handle button is pressed on vehicles equipped with a Blind Spot Warning Light. This feature is currently available on the 2024 Refreshed Model 3 Highland and the Cybertruck.
The object detection capability of the blind spot indicator includes identifying cars, pedestrians, cyclists, and other objects. While the specifics of what falls under the “other objects” category are unclear, it likely includes items typically detected by Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, such as traffic cones and bollards.
At present, the warning is only visual for the driver and front passenger, without any on-screen display or audible tone. To enable the Blind Spot Door Warnings feature, users need to navigate to Controls > Safety in the vehicle settings.
Looking ahead, it would be beneficial for Tesla to utilize the ambient light strip in the vehicle for warning indicators, in addition to the single red LED inside the door speaker. An audio alert could also enhance safety for individuals who may not notice the visual warning.
