Tesla enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to with the latest 2024 Holiday Update, which introduces two groundbreaking weather features – Weather at Destination and the highly anticipated Weather Radar Overlay. These new additions enhance the existing weather feature introduced in update 2024.26, which provided users with hourly forecasts, precipitation chances, UV index, Air Quality Index, and more.
In addition to these major upgrades, the update also includes several smaller weather enhancements, such as alerts notifying users of significant weather changes at their destination.
Discover Weather At Destination
When navigating to a destination and viewing the full direction list, users will now see the expected weather next to their destination’s arrival time. By tapping on this information, a detailed weather pop-up will display the destination’s complete weather data.
Users can easily switch between the weather at their current location and the weather at their destination by tapping the weather icon at the top of the interface and selecting Destination.
The trip planner takes into account the weather at the destination, providing users with charge time, travel time, and weather conditions at the expected arrival time, even if it’s hours away.
In cases where the weather at the destination differs significantly from the current weather (e.g., rain versus sunshine), a brief weather alert will be displayed above the destination ETA before disappearing.
Tesla has also introduced a new voice command feature. Asking, “What’s the weather?” or similar queries will bring up Tesla’s weather popup.
It’s worth noting that the weather at destination feature may not be available for long road trips spanning multiple days until users are closer to their destination.
Experience Weather Radar Overlay
As part of the weather enhancements, Tesla has introduced a radar overlay for precipitation. Users can access this feature by tapping the map and then selecting the weather icon on the map’s right side. The radar overlay, centered on the vehicle, displays animated radar data from the last 3 hours, allowing users to track storm directions and pause the animation at any point.
In this view, users can scroll around and view weather data anywhere, even when zoomed out. The feature works while driving, although it may be distracting when focusing on navigation. For users with Points of Interest enabled on their map, the weather overlay will only display Charging POIs.
Requirements and Data
Premium Connectivity is necessary for all weather features to function, and simply being on WiFi or using a hotspot will not suffice for data retrieval. The weather data, including the radar information, is sourced from The Weather Channel.
While weather and weather at destination are available on all Tesla vehicles except for the 2012-2020 Model S and Model X, the weather radar feature has stricter requirements, necessitating the newer AMD Ryzen-powered infotainment center found in the 2021+ Model S and Model X, as well as newer Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
