Elon Musk Sets High Expectations for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Technology
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has once again raised the bar for the next major leap in Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, stating that the upcoming version 15 will surpass human capabilities in terms of safety. In response to reviews of the current FSD v14.3, Musk emphasized that while minor updates will continue to refine the existing experience, the real breakthrough will come with version 15. This new iteration is expected to handle complex and unsupervised driving scenarios, marking a significant milestone for Tesla’s autonomous driving software.
One of the key highlights of version 15 is what Musk refers to as the “large model.” In the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), parameters are crucial components that enable a digital brain to process information and recognize intricate patterns. Musk confirmed that version 15 will utilize a 10x parameter model, allowing the car’s AI to analyze vast amounts of video data collected by Tesla. This substantial increase in processing power is anticipated to enhance the vehicle’s ability to predict and respond to unpredictable real-world situations, such as sudden lane changes or unexpected pedestrian movements.
While Tesla owners can expect incremental improvements in the v14.3 series, including smoother lane changes and bug fixes, the transition to version 15 signifies a significant architectural shift. Musk envisions this update as the breakthrough that will enable true unsupervised driving, bringing the company closer to its ultimate goal of fully autonomous vehicles.
However, a looming question remains regarding whether owners of Tesla vehicles equipped with Hardware 4 (HW4) will be able to support FSD v15, or if newer Hardware 5 (HW5) will be required. Some HW4 owners are concerned about being left behind, similar to HW3 vehicles that are still awaiting the FSD 14 lite update, expected to arrive later this summer.
As Tesla continues to push the boundaries of autonomous driving technology, version 15 represents a significant step towards achieving fully autonomous vehicles that can navigate complex real-world scenarios with ease. With Musk’s ambitious goals and the company’s dedication to innovation, the future of self-driving technology looks promising for Tesla and its customers.
