Norway recently achieved a significant milestone in the electric vehicle (EV) market, with Tesla playing a key role in this achievement. In 2025, Norway broke its all-time new car sales record, reaching nearly 180,000 vehicle registrations. This surge was driven by buyers rushing to make purchases before higher electric vehicle taxes came into effect in the new year. As a result, fully electric vehicles accounted for an impressive 96% share of all new car sales in Norway, solidifying the country’s reputation as the most EV-friendly market globally.
Among the various automakers, Tesla emerged as the clear winner in Norway, capturing a 19.1% market share with 34,285 registrations in 2025. This placed Tesla ahead of competitors like Volkswagen and Volvo. Geir Inge Stokke, the director of the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), praised Tesla’s achievement, highlighting the brand’s significant impact on the Norwegian market with its limited model lineup.
At the model level, Tesla’s dominance was evident, with the Model Y leading the sales charts with 27,621 registrations, accounting for 15.4% of the entire car market in Norway. The Model 3 also made it to the top five models, contributing 3.7% of total sales. These results underscored Tesla’s strong presence in Norway compared to other European markets where Tesla sales experienced a decline in 2025.
The surge in Tesla’s sales in Norway was largely driven by policy changes, such as a VAT increase on electric vehicles post the new year. However, Tesla’s success in Norway in 2025 built upon an already historic year, where the Model Y surpassed the Nissan Leaf as the best-selling EV in the country. Despite uncertainties about demand normalization in 2026, one thing is certain – Tesla is not just competing in Norway, but is shaping and defining the market.
Overall, Norway’s record-breaking EV sales in 2025, led by Tesla, demonstrate the country’s commitment to sustainable transportation and the growing popularity of electric vehicles. With Tesla’s strong presence and success in the Norwegian market, the future of EVs in Norway looks promising.
